According to a nationwide survey «"Health Index. Ukraine"» The average life expectancy of men in Ukraine is 12 years lower than the same indicator in most European countries. In 2019, this indicator for men in Ukraine was 66 years, and for women - 76 years.

Why is this so? Men's longevity is influenced by behavioral risk factors: smoking, alcohol consumption, etc. They go for preventive check-ups less often and do not seek medical help in a timely manner.

During Prostate Cancer Awareness Week and Men's Health, we want to remind you of important aspects that will help men take better care of their health.

Get preventive checkups from your family doctor.

The main task of a family doctor is the prevention of both infectious and non-infectious diseases. In addition, he provides advisory assistance in the following issues:

  • smoking;
  • use of alcohol and other psychoactive substances;
  • unhealthy diet;
  • insufficient physical activity;
  • formation of healthy lifestyle skills.

Remember the risk factors for prostate cancer and other prostate diseases.

Prostate health is very important for a man's well-being and longevity. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as prostate adenoma, and prostate cancer can have similar symptoms, such as frequent urination, pain and small amounts of urine; urinary incontinence, etc. Early diagnosis will help increase the success of treatment and recovery.

The risk of developing prostate cancer in men aged 50 is 42% and increases with age. Men aged 45 and over are recommended to take a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test. Do not neglect this! Visit your family doctor, and if necessary, a urologist for preventive examinations. Talk to your doctor about prostate diseases and follow the specialist's recommendations!

Take care of your sex life.

Among the factors that affect sexual health, there are: ecology, unhealthy lifestyle, psychological factors, decreased testosterone levels, genetic factors, and various diseases.

It is important for older people not to forget about their sex life and to continue it. What can a man do to improve his sex life:

  • Visit your doctor on time and go for preventive check-ups. Contact your family doctor or urologist, who can recommend medication and advise you if necessary;
  • never take medications or dietary supplements without consulting a doctor;
  • be physically active;
  • Take care of your mental health, don't be afraid to seek professional help and rest.
