On the morning of August 28, 2014, on the road between the villages of Novozar'ivka and Voykove, Romantsov's company-tactical group came under heavy fire: first it was fired upon by Russian artillery, and then by enemy sabotage and reconnaissance units. The infantry fighting vehicle in which Igor Romantsov was riding was hit by a shell, but he remained with his soldiers until the last. The fate of the group remained unknown for a long time. After the battle, the militants collected the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers and simply buried them nearby in a mass grave. Relatives hoped to the last that Igor and the other guys were captured, posting their photos on social networks. But on September 16, the grave of the soldiers of the 92nd brigade was found by volunteers from the Black Tulip mission. Polish journalists were nearby and filmed it all. Igor's father recognized his son's body from the burnt sneakers in the video. Later, DNA testing confirmed the terrible truth.
On September 16, 2014, the body of Igor Romantsov was exhumed and brought to Zaporizhia by the search mission "Expedition-200" ("Black Tulip"), where he was identified by DNA testing.
On February 21, 2015, Igor Romantsov was buried in the village of Volokhovka, Kharkiv region, at the local cemetery.
