Childhood obesity is one of the biggest public health challenges of the 21st century. Studies on the prevalence of overweight among children in Ukraine are disappointing - every fourth child is overweight, of which 9% are obese.
What is the danger? Modern children move little, eat high-calorie food, too many sweets and as a result - the calorie content of the diet exceeds the energy needs of the body. Excess weight can lead to mental (low self-esteem) and social (bullying) problems, as well as the development of diabetes, hypertension, diseases of the cardiovascular system and musculoskeletal system.
Preventing overweight in children depends primarily on parents:
Be an example. It is parents who shape their child's eating behavior and the need for sufficient physical activity from early childhood.
Introduce healthy eating at home, and let this principle become a permanent practice in the future.
Teach your children to eat a full breakfast and avoid eating late in the day (especially before bedtime). Try to eat slowly at the table, do not overeat. Limit salt intake.
Teach children to eat healthy snacks (fresh fruits, vegetables, dried fruits, whole grains) instead of unhealthy snacks (sweets, fast food, sugary drinks, etc.).
Encourage children to be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day. Involve them in sports clubs or other groups with intense physical activity. Move with your children.
Limit and monitor the time children spend with gadgets. Monitor your child's sleep schedule, as lack of sleep increases the risk of being overweight.
Remember that only sufficient physical activity and a balance between energy expenditure and calorie intake can minimize the risk of your child becoming overweight. Your child's health is in your hands!
