Railroad crossing – a high-risk area: rules that save lives

A railroad crossing is one of the most dangerous places for vehicles.

Since the beginning of 2026, 4 road accidents have occurred at the railway crossings of the regional branch of the "Southern Railway" of JSC "Ukrzaliznytsia", while 7 such cases occurred in the entire year 2025. All accidents occurred due to the fault of vehicle drivers. Fortunately, in all accidents in 2026, there were no injured persons.

So, on 01/13/2026 at 10:55 a.m. at an unguarded crossing at 96 km PK7, a collision between train No. 6604 and a passenger car occurred. There were no injuries and the branch was not at fault.

Oversize for even and odd tracks, damaged contact network supports. The locomotive and 8 cars derailed from the head of the train, damaged 6 contact network supports and 4 metal crossbars.

Dear drivers! Do not forget that railway tracks can only be crossed at railway crossings, and it is forbidden to enter a guarded crossing when the barrier is closed or starting to close (regardless of the traffic light signal), when the traffic light signal is prohibited (regardless of the position of the barrier), or when the traffic light signal prohibits at unguarded railway crossings.

It is also prohibited for vehicles to enter a railway crossing if a traffic jam has formed behind it and this may lead to a forced stop at the crossing.

Most of the crossings have barriers that cover 2/3 of the roadway or the entire roadway. Driving into the oncoming lane and attempting to cross the crossing in the oncoming lane are dangerous and prohibited by the Traffic Rules.

Compliance with the rules governing the passage of railway crossings is the key to the safety of drivers and passengers, because the stake in speed competitions with a locomotive is your life.

Drivers! Be attentive and careful at railroad crossings and near railroad tracks. Don't risk your life or the lives of others!
