As a reminder, on November 25 last year, the Law of Ukraine "On Ensuring the Participation of Civilians in the Defense of Ukraine" came into force to improve the procedure for obtaining, declaring, and handling firearms.
Since the beginning of the declaration, 83 citizens have contacted the Chuguiv District Police Department and declared 83 firearms, including 52 assault rifles, 8 rifles, 21 smoothbore rifles and 2 pistols, as well as about 13,744 rounds of ammunition for them. Another 1,668 rounds of ammunition and 6 grenades were voluntarily surrendered by citizens to the police without declaration.
Law enforcement officials report that voluntarily declaring a weapon exempts from criminal liability and gives the right to legally keep the weapon in one's possession.
Declarants need to collect a package of necessary documents (written statement; passport; identification code; certificate of residence/registration; 3.5×4.5 cm photo) and contact the nearest police station.
During the declaration, law enforcement officers inspect the weapon, record it, and issue the person a declaration notice. After that, the citizen may keep the weapon for the duration of martial law.
Police are urging residents of the area to take advantage of the opportunity and declare their weapons to avoid criminal liability and create a safe environment in the region.
