Human trafficking is a crime whose object is a person.

There are different forms of human trafficking:

  • sexual exploitation;
  • involvement in criminal activity;
  • involvement in debt bondage;
  • adoption for profit;
  • use in armed conflicts;
  • forced labor;
  • forced pregnancy;
  • organ harvesting;
  • conducting experiments on a person without their consent.

Such unlawful actions against a person are punishable by imprisonment in accordance with Article 149 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Often, a person who has been trafficked cannot immediately recognize it. The National Social Service of Ukraine has prepared a list of indicators to determine whether a person is a victim of human trafficking:

  • non-compliance of working conditions or provision of services with those promised;
  • restrictions on free movement;
  • prohibition of free communication with relatives;
  • use of violence or threats;
  • seizure of passports and other documents;
  • coercion to perform work or provide services;
  • withholding of earnings or not paying them at all;
  • forcing to beg or engage in illegal activities;
  • use in armed conflicts against will.

If a person meets at least two of the criteria, they are likely a victim of human trafficking.
