Child labor in Ukraine: rights and guarantees

Child labor must comply with the requirements of the law and not harm their health, education, and all-round development. In Ukraine, the use of child labor is strictly regulated by the state in order to protect the rights of the child.

Persons under the age of 18 may work only under the condition of compliance with the established working hours and exclusively in jobs that are not included in the list of prohibited ones. It is prohibited to involve children in heavy, dangerous or harmful work, as well as in night work, overtime work and work on weekends.

Working without formalizing the employment relationship is a violation of the law.

According to the legislation of Ukraine, in particular the Labor Code of Ukraine and the Law of Ukraine "On the Protection of Childhood", employment is permitted, as a rule, from the age of 16. In exceptional cases, with the consent of one of the parents or a person replacing them, employment is permitted from the age of 15, and from the age of 14 - only for light work that does not harm health and does not interfere with education.

Minors are subject to reduced working hours. They are required to undergo a medical examination before being hired and annually thereafter. Minors are paid the same as adults for similar work, despite the reduced working hours.

Work should not interfere with obtaining education and completing the curriculum.

Parents and employers are responsible for respecting the labor rights of minors. Violations of child labor legislation are subject to administrative and financial liability.

Protecting children's rights is a shared responsibility of the state, employers, parents, and society. Ensuring safe and legal working conditions is a guarantee of the healthy development and future of every child.

Protecting the rights of the child is everyone's duty.
