There are more than 2,500 species of rodents on the globe. Of all vertebrates, rodents are the ones that cause the most harm to humanity. They are carriers and sources of about 200 different infectious and invasive diseases that can affect humans and animals.
Rats and mice are particularly dangerous in spreading infectious diseases, as they are most in contact with business premises, people's homes, household items, and food.
Rodents pose a threat to humanity almost all year round: in spring, summer, and fall, mainly on land and in outbuildings, and in winter, in our homes.
Human infection occurs through food, water, or broken skin contaminated with feces. Infection is also possible through a rat bite.
The most dangerous diseases, in the spread of which rodents play an important role, are: anthrax, tularemia, brucellosis, leptospirosis, plague, foot-and-mouth disease, erysipelas, coccidiosis, and rabies.
Of all the infections transmitted by rodents, the most common is leptospirosis – an acute infectious disease that occurs with high fever, intoxication, damage to the kidneys, liver, cardiovascular and nervous systems. Leptospirosis has a severe course (up to 70% among hospitalized patients) and high mortality (up to 20%). Rodents are a reservoir of leptospirosis and can be a source of diseases dangerous to humans and domestic animals. After suffering the disease, rodents remain for a long time and release the pathogen into the environment. The main route of transmission of the pathogen to animals is through water. Leptospirosis can be difficult to diagnose, because the symptoms are similar to those of other diseases – for example, they can resemble the flu, which is more common in autumn and winter. In addition, sometimes the disease can be asymptomatic.
In order to prevent and avert the occurrence of infectious diseases among people that are spread by mouse-like rodents, it is necessary to carry out deratization measures and disinfect wells.
What is deratization?
Deratization is a set of measures to destroy rodents (rats, mice, voles, etc.), which is one of the ways to combat infectious diseases by exterminating rodents - carriers and sources of many infectious diseases.
WHEN SHOULD I PERFORM DISINFECTION?
It is worth carrying out deratization as soon as you see at least one rodent. They reproduce very quickly, so you cannot delay removing mice and rats. At risk: food industry enterprises, educational institutions, healthcare institutions, public buildings and structures, etc.
The absence of signs of rodent presence (fresh damage to objects, food, excrement) or rodents in traps and traps for three days indicates that the facility has been free from rodents.
