The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) provides targeted individual assistance to people who have suffered from explosive ordnance (UXO) trauma. The DRC will ensure an individual approach and flexibility in providing assistance, taking into account the sensitivity of the issues faced by the victims and their families.
The assistance program does NOT provide for basic needs such as food, hygiene, housing, etc. DRC assistance is provided based on an analysis of individual needs, review of relevant documentation, and personal interviews with DRC staff.
Currently, the program covers the following types of assistance:
- facilitating emergency transportation in cases where access to a medical facility is not restricted for security reasons and when this type of care is not provided by other institutions or national medical services;
- access to education and/or employment: special individual learning aids at school or at home (e.g., an individual chair or desk to meet the child's special needs, a computer) or extracurricular educational programs (lessons) or workplace arrangements, as well as the purchase of new equipment for self-employment;
- inclusive living conditions: for example, bathroom renovations, wheelchair ramps or adapted sleeping space for people with disabilities;
- costs of restoring/obtaining necessary documents or legal costs;
- travel expenses to necessary services (including accommodation costs);
- assistive devices: for example, prosthetic limbs, wheelchairs, walkers, hearing aids, back braces, etc. where assistive devices and necessary medical care/examination are available;
- medical care: medicines, examinations, etc.;
- rehabilitation and recovery: medical procedures, visits to medical specialists (neurologist, orthopedist, dentist, etc.);
- psychological assistance: consultations, coaching.
Case registration is done by phone, through referrals from partner organizations, or in person.
