As last year, the increase in the incidence of COVID-19 in Ukraine is recorded in August. However, this year the number of patients is 65% less: if since the beginning of August 2025, 8714 cases of COVID-19 have been officially registered in the electronic health system (1342 patients received hospital treatment), then last year in August 2024, 26451 cases were registered during this period (3191 patients received hospital treatment).
Currently, the largest number of cases has been registered in Kyiv (2076) and the region (726), Dnipropetrovsk region (1469) and Lviv region (735). In total, 81 cases of the subvariant "Stratus" have been confirmed in the country (in 7 regions). 2 cases of "Nimbus" (one each in Odessa and Vinnytsia regions).
The incidence of coronavirus disease continues to increase in the Kharkiv region.
Last week (August 18-24), 175 cases of COVID-19 were registered.
Among the sick are 11 children. 74 people were hospitalized in specialized healthcare facilities (531 out of all hospitalized with a diagnosis of SARS).
The increase in the incidence of COVID-19 in our region, as in the previous year, has been observed since the end of July. And although the incidence rate in the region (6.77 per 100 thousand population) is below the long-term average, compared to the previous week, there is a three-fold increase in the indicators.
The proportion of COVID-19 patients in the structure of acute respiratory viral infections increased from 5.31% to 13.71%.
A total of 1,282 people fell ill with SARS between August 18 and 24, of which about 30.31% were children under 17 years old.
The coronavirus subvariant "Nimbus" (NB.1.8.1), as well as the coronavirus subvariant "Stratus" (XFG) are currently dominant in the world. These are new mutations of the Omicron strain. Like the influenza virus, SARS-CoV-2 is constantly changing, new variants and subvariants appear. This is the usual evolution of respiratory viruses, which is why approaches to prevention and vaccination, the composition of vaccines in the world change every season.
The characteristic symptom of "Nimbus" is a sharp pain in the throat, the characteristic symptom of "Stratus" is a hoarse voice, hoarseness. The remaining symptoms for both subvariants are the same as for other COVID-19 variants: runny nose, fever, cough, headache, fatigue, loss of smell or taste.
Vaccination remains the main method of protection to avoid severe disease and complications. Ukraine uses an Omicron-specific vaccine, which is adapted to protect against the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and its subvariants circulating in the world. Seasonal vaccination remains recommended for people at risk of severe COVID-19.
Revaccination is recommended after 6-12 months:
- adults and children who have weakened immunity or concomitant or severe chronic diseases;
- pregnant women;
- people over 60 years old;
- adults and children who are at risk of severe illness and death due to coronavirus infection,
- representatives of professional risk groups (for example, doctors, teachers, military personnel, etc.).
The need for revaccination is determined by a doctor, taking into account the recommendations approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
We will remind you, last year the Ministry of Health updated the recommendations for vaccination against coronavirus infection. According to them, the recommended vaccination is determined for people from risk groups. The need for revaccination is determined by a doctor. People who have undergone a basic vaccination course (two or three vaccinations, depending on the vaccine) and received a booster vaccination in previous years can continue to be revaccinated free of charge. To do this, you need to make an appointment with your family doctor and get vaccinated after the visit.
