FAO will allocate $150 million for support for rural communities Ukraine, which suffered from the war. They announced the start of the implementation of a two-year Emergency Response and Rapid Recovery Plan.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) plan to assist Ukrainian farmers is designed for 2025-2026 and provides assistance to more than 500,000 people in vulnerable situations. Once work resumes, the affected farmers will contribute to ensuring the country's food security.
The UN is planning to provide agricultural resources to the most vulnerable rural families and small farmers affected by the war. The plan also includes clearing farmland of explosive remnants of war.
It also provides for multi-year early recovery measures, including supporting productive capacity, market access and technical assistance.
“We are launching this plan at a time when Ukrainian farmers continue to face enormous challenges, from mined fields and destroyed infrastructure to limited access to markets. Through the Emergency Response and Early Recovery Plan 2025–2026, FAO continues to support Ukraine’s efforts to address the consequences of the war, particularly in rural areas close to the frontline,” said Mohammed Azuka, Acting Head of the FAO Representative Office in Ukraine.
According to the World Bank, the damage and losses in the agricultural sector of Ukraine for the period from February 2022 to December 2024 are estimated at almost $84 billion. The irrigation sector in particular suffered damage of $1.6 billion. Warehouses, farms, perennial plantings, equipment, products, etc. were destroyed.
