Why is this important? The digital world, like the physical environment, is becoming increasingly cluttered with unnecessary data every day.

  • Outdated files, duplicate photos, spam, applications that are no longer used. All this not only takes up memory, but also consumes energy in data centers, which directly affects climate change.

«"We must be environmentally responsible and take care of the environment every day. Ecocide is ongoing in Ukraine, destroyed ecosystems affect the quality of air, water, soil, food, and, ultimately, the health of each of us. Digital cleaning is a safe and affordable way to be a socially active citizen, acquire a new eco-habit and apply it every day."»Yulia Marchel, leader of the country's largest environmental movement "Let's do it Ukraine"«.

Thought-provoking facts:

  • 75% all digital data is never used.
    • Every year, the Internet and its infrastructure produce 900 million tons of CO₂ — more than all of Germany.
    • One employee who spends 15 hours of online meetings with the camera on creates 9.4 kg CO₂.
    • 62 trillion spam emails consumed per year 33 billion kWh electricity and cause

20 million tons of CO₂.

  • In 2035, the volume of digital data in the world could exceed 2000 zettabytes. To print them, you would need 20 trillion trees — 6 times more than there are now on the planet.

What is digital cleaning? This is cleaning electronic devices from unnecessary information that not only clutters our digital space but also harms the environment.

What needs to be done?

  • Clear the memory of phones, computers, and cloud storage.
    • Delete duplicate photos, unnecessary files, and unnecessary applications.
    • Clean up email, delete spam, cancel newsletters.
    • Reduce your digital footprint on social media.
    • Increase digital security: delete old accounts, update passwords, restrict access to data.

Who can join? Absolutely everyone: schoolchildren, students, teachers, employees of organizations, government agencies, companies, public initiatives, activists.

The goal of the campaign is not just to clean gadgets. We strive to create a culture of conscious use of digital technologies, draw attention to the impact of "invisible" digital pollution, and encourage daily habits to reduce your digital footprint.

Digital cleaning can be done not only in April. The organizers encourage you to do this regularly – once a week, once a month, or at least every season. Even small steps are a contribution to preserving the planet.

We encourage everyone to join the campaign! Clean your devices, share the results on social media with the hashtag #DigitalCleanupUkraine and motivate your friends, colleagues, and partners.
