How to reduce the health effects of combustion products

1

Recently, forest fires and burning of dry grass around forests have been ongoing in our region. In this regard, there is significant smoke in the air and a burning smell. Recommendations for reducing the health impact of products are from the Center for Public Health of Ukraine.

If you find yourself in an emergency situation related to the burning of chemicals, follow these tips - they will help you and your family protect your health and life from the harmful effects of combustion products.

During and immediately after the situation occurs:

  • If possible, leave the smoke zone;
  • Minimize your time outdoors;
  • If you experience shortness of breath or cough, consult a doctor;
  • If the smell of burning increases, we recommend wearing moistened protective masks. This is especially true for the elderly and those suffering from diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic lung diseases, and allergies;
  • Use rooms that have air purification facilities and systems;
  • Keep the windows closed. To prevent smoky air from entering, it is recommended to cover windows, vents, and door frames with a damp cloth and change it periodically.

After the situation arises:

  • Drink more fluids — up to 2-3 liters per day for adults. To restore the loss of salts and trace elements, you can drink slightly salted and mineral alkaline water, fermented milk drinks (skimmed milk, whey), juices, mineralized drinks, oxygen-protein cocktails;
  • Carry out wet cleaning in living spaces and workplaces. It is also useful to place containers with water in living and working spaces to make the air more humid;
  • Take a shower several times a day;
  • Rinse your nose and throat periodically;
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables, as well as foods rich in minerals;
  • Residents in the fire-affected area must thoroughly wash produce from their own gardens before consumption;
  • Do not drink alcohol or smoke, as this provokes the development of acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory system;
  • Limit children's contact with sand and soil on playgrounds located in the fire impact area;
  • If you have chronic diseases, follow your doctor's instructions.
  • Do not go jogging or walking.

Remember these tips and pass them on to your family and friends. This is exactly the case when knowledge can save your health and even your life.
